A whopping grand total of 2,230 nominees applied for the 2015 Broadcom MASTERS! The 300 Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology, and Engineering for Rising Stars) semifinalists will be announced on August 19.

Here's what we've learned about this year’s spectacular round-up of applicants:

More than half of the applicants:

  • Participate in sports
  • Volunteer regularly within their communities

They are also heavily involved in activities such as:

  • Student Council
  • Science and Math Olympiads
  • Boy and Girl Scouts
  • Science Club

The Broadcom MASTERS applicants like to keep busy. Their list of interesting pasttimes includes:

  • Hosting a podcast
  • Archery
  • Costume designing
  • Figureskating
  • Bee keeping
  • Ukelele Club
  • Norweigian Folk Dancing
  • Language classes (Chinese and Russian, among others)
  • Leathercrafting
  • Fencing

To be eligible to apply to Broadcom MASTERS, students had to finish in the top 10% of projects at their SSP-affiliated local science fair.

These hardworking applicants never cease to inspire us at the Society. Stay tuned for more information about the semifinalists and finalists when they are announced on August 19 and September 2, respectively!
