Broadcom MASTERS 2017 Winners

On October 24, the Broadcom Foundation and Society for Science & the Public announced the top winners of the 2017 Broadcom MASTERS, who took home a total of $100,000 in awards. Top winners include:

The Samueli Foundation Prize: $25,000
Faris Irwin Wald
Project: The Correlation Between Solar Coronal Hole Occurrences and the Formation of Tropical and Extra-Tropical Cyclones

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Award for Health Advancement: $20,000
Emily Tianshi
Project: Microscopic Study of Torrey Pine Needles for Moisture Condensation

Marconi/Samueli Award for Innovation: $10,000
Meghna Behari
Project: Aquabot: An Integrated Modular Platform for Testing and Monitoring Surface Water Quality

Lemelson Award for Invention: $7,500
Helen Lyons
Project: Using Flotation Systems to Harness Wave Power Using Electromagnetism

Broadcom MASTERS 2017 Finalists

Broadcom Foundation and Society for Science & the Public (the Society) are proud to announce the selection of 30 students as finalists in the seventh annual Broadcom MASTERS®– the nation’s most prestigious Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) competition for middle school students.

The top 300 MASTERS hail from 236 middle schools in 39 states and represent 111 regional and state science fairs across the U.S.

The Society and Broadcom Foundation are proud of the record breaking 2,499 students who completed the 2017 application. Entrants came from more than 6,000 nominees, representing the top 10% of science fair projects nationwide.
